What is Kaffarah?
Expiation — A Path Back to Allah
"Allah does not burden a soul beyond that which it can bear."
Quran 2:286
The Meaning of Kaffarah
Kaffarah comes from the Arabic root meaning to cover or expiate. It is a specific form of atonement prescribed in Islamic law for certain serious violations or broken commitments. When a Muslim commits one of these violations, Kaffarah provides a structured path to make amends — combining personal accountability with an act of charity or worship.
Kaffarah is not a punishment. It is a mercy. Rather than leaving a person burdened with guilt or spiritual debt, Islam provides a defined way to seek expiation, restore one's spiritual state, and benefit others in the process.
When is Kaffarah Required?
- Breaking an oath — Kaffarah for Yamin
- Intentionally breaking a Ramadan fast
- Zihar — a form of forbidden speech about one's spouse
- Accidental killing — Diya and Kaffarah
The General Structure of Kaffarah
- First: Freeing a slave — no longer applicable today
- Second: Fasting for a set number of days
- Third: Feeding a set number of poor people
In today's context, the relevant options are fasting or feeding the poor. The sequence must be followed in order for most types of Kaffarah.
