Types of Kaffarah
Understanding Each Form of Expiation
When it applies: When a Muslim makes an oath in the name of Allah and then breaks it.
Expiation — choose one:
- Feed 10 poor people one meal each, or
- Clothe 10 poor people, or
- Free a slave — not applicable today
- If unable to do any of the above: fast for 3 days

When it applies: When a Muslim intentionally breaks their Ramadan fast through eating, drinking, or sexual intercourse without a valid excuse.
Expiation — must follow this sequence:
- Free a slave — not applicable today — then if unable:
- Fast for 60 consecutive days — then if unable:
- Feed 60 poor people one meal each

When it applies: When a husband says to his wife "You are to me like the back of my mother." Islam forbade this and prescribed Kaffarah for it.
Expiation — in order:
- Free a slave — not applicable today — then if unable:
- Fast for 60 consecutive days before resuming marital relations — then if unable:
- Feed 60 poor people one meal each

When it applies: When a Muslim accidentally causes the death of another Muslim without intent.
Expiation:
- Pay blood money (Diya) to the family of the deceased, and
- Free a slave — not applicable today — or fast for 2 consecutive months

When it applies: When a pilgrim violates the rules of Ihram.
Expiation — choose one:
- Slaughter an animal, or
- Fast for 3 days, or
- Feed 6 poor people (3 Sa' of food)
