No. Sadaqah is any act of kindness or giving done for the sake of Allah. It includes money, food, clothing, time, knowledge, a kind word, a smile, removing something harmful from a path, and much more. The Prophet ﷺ said every act of kindness is Sadaqah.
The Prophet ﷺ said clearly: "Sadaqah does not decrease wealth." (Muslim) The Quran promises that Allah multiplies the reward of those who give. Give freely and trust in Allah's promise.
Yes. Giving Sadaqah on behalf of a deceased person is one of the most valuable gifts you can offer them. The majority of scholars hold that the reward reaches the deceased. Many people give Sadaqah Jariyah in the name of a loved one who has passed, so the reward continues indefinitely.
Yes. Unlike Zakat, Sadaqah can be given to non-Muslims. The Prophet ﷺ himself gave to non-Muslim neighbors, travelers, and those in need. Showing kindness to non-Muslims is encouraged as a reflection of Islamic character.
Sadaqah can be given at any time. However, certain times carry greater reward — during Ramadan, on Fridays, during the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah, and when you yourself are in need. The Prophet ﷺ said the best Sadaqah is that given when you are healthy and fear poverty, not when you are on your deathbed.

Yes. Spending on your family is considered Sadaqah if done with the right intention. The Prophet ﷺ said: "A man's spending on his family is Sadaqah." Giving to relatives in need carries double reward — the reward of charity and the reward of maintaining family ties.
Anonymous giving is praised in the Quran and carries greater reward. However, giving openly is also permissible and can encourage others to give. Give in whatever way keeps your intention pure.
